App from SourceHOV’s partner Speak UP! offers proactive approach in preventing harassment & suspicious activity on campus
April 27, 2016 Dallas, TX -- April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and college campuses across the country are offering programming and education opportunities for their students to help prevent sexual assault.
As part of ongoing efforts to ensure campus safety, and in time to correlate with SAAM, Fort Worth-based Texas Wesleyan has added a new anti-bullying app to help ensure campus safety. The new Speak UP! App provides students with a means to anonymously report behavior concerns to administrators and brings awareness to issues of bullying, harassment and suspicious behavior. The app’s analytics provide information directly to school administrators to help pinpoint campus safety issues.
“The safety, security, and well-being of each member of the Texas Wesleyan community are foundational to the student experience and are of utmost importance,” Dennis Hall, dean of students at Texas Wesleyan University, said. “The new app provides students a confidential, open line of communication and removes barriers to reporting disruptive behavior.”
Parents and teachers surveyed by the Speak UP! team reported that students notice suspicious behavior earliest, and, when reported, preventive measures can be taken to stop issues before they begin. Student reporting is therefore a vital step toward preventing major behavioral escalations.
“We know that college students use their smartphones to communicate and text, and this app is a way they can communicate with us in a way that is comfortable for them,” Hall said.
Currently, there are more than 7,500 primary and secondary school students using the in app in the United States. Texas Wesleyan is the first college to use the app.
“I applaud Texas Wesleyan for their progressive and proactive approach to improving the campus environment for students and faculty members. With this technology, parents and families have that extra dose of peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are even safer right here in Fort Worth," Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price said in a statement.
The app is free to Texas Wesleyan students and they can download it on any iOS or Android device. Additionally, they can access the web version of the app on any device (computer, tablet or phone) with internet access.
“We’re pleased to introduce the Speak UP! app to Texas Wesleyan,” Ron Cogburn, CEO of SourceHOV, said. “We’re certain that the power of analytics will play a key role in helping Texas Wesleyan identify and prevent issues by giving students the power to report and ultimately make a difference.”
